Weddings in Spain

Civil Marriage
World Marriage Day - February 10th

Wedding Rings Getting married in Spain can be a lengthy affair but the reward is worth the time and effort spent. To get married in Spain you have to apply for a civil marriage, either to the Civil Registry or to the District Court (Juzgado). One of you must be a resident in Spain to get married, however, the venue of your choice can apply for a certificate stating that you live at the designated address, the mayor of that town can then officially marry you.

You are required to submit the following documents:
  • From the Civil Registry or Court in whose jurisdiction the marriage is to take place you must obtain an application form
  • Original birth certificate, notarised and translated into Spanish
  • Certificate of bachelorship or non-impediment to marriage. A declaration of bachelorship may be obtained at your local Civil Registry. Where this is not possible, a "statement in lieu of an Embassy issued certificate of non-impediment to marriage" is usually accepted
  • Divorced/Widowed: Original marriage and death or divorce certificates. These must be notarised and translated into Spanish. Divorces obtained outside of Spain must be convalidated, the Exeqatur must be obtained from the Sala 1º del Tribunal Supremo, it would be advisable to appoint a lawyer to help with this paperwork
  • Certificate of Consular Registration - this is issued by the Embassy or Consulate upon presentation of of a valid passport and completion of a registration card, this certificate must include a Spanish address

Certificate of Residence

Residents of Spain may obtain this document from the Tenecia de Alcaida in their district of residence. For non-residents, a sworn statement declaring the addresses of the last few years may be signed before a consul.

    • Saturday for no luck at all
  • Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind & true
  • When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate
  • If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know
  • Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden & for Man
  • Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day
  • Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you'll go
  • Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred
  • Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see
  • Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine
  • If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry
  • If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember
  • When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last

If the groom drops the wedding band during the ceremony, the marriage is doomed.
The new bride must enter her home by the main door, and must not trip or fall - hence the custom of carrying the bride over the threshold.

The spouse who goes to sleep first on the wedding day will be the first to die.
